How to search for affordable art without buying badly

“Affordable art” is a phrase that has been used to sell posters in frames. We mean something different: original works, by artists with a practice and a gallery, at prices most professionals can pay without a loan. That market exists, it is large, and it is where almost every collector we know began. Here is where to look and how to look.

Start with the medium, not the artist

The same artist who sells a canvas for USD 15,000 may sell a drawing for USD 900 and a print for USD 400. Works on paper and editions are not lesser works; they are the same eye at a different scale. A collection of drawings by artists whose paintings you cannot yet afford is one of the most intelligent ways to start, and it ages well.

Editions: read the numbers

A photograph in an edition of 5 with 2 artist’s proofs is a different object from one in an edition of 100. The price should reflect it, and so should the certificate. Ask for the edition size, your number and whether the artist signs each copy. Smaller editions of strong images are the affordable market’s best-kept secret.

Emerging artists: follow the programme

An artist’s first solo show in a serious gallery is often the last time their unique works cost four figures. The signal to trust is not a social-media following but the gallery’s programme: who they have shown before, who they lend to, which fairs accept them. Follow a gallery for a year and you will see the same names again with higher prices.

Studio sales, open studios and graduate shows

Buying directly from an artist is legitimate and often generous on both sides, with one condition: the same documents. A signed certificate, an invoice and a photograph of the work with its dimensions. Without them, a direct purchase is hard to insure and harder to resell. Graduate shows in Mexico City, Madrid, London and New York are priced for students’ friends; the works are sometimes the best the artist ever makes.

Online catalogues with published prices

A gallery that publishes prices online (as we do) is telling you two things: the price is the same for everyone, and they expect to be compared. Use filters for medium and price, look at the works you would never search for, and read the artist page before the work page.

What affordable never means

A “giclée” or “museum-quality print” of an existing painting: that is a reproduction, not an edition.

A work with no artist named, or an artist with no other work anywhere.

A price that changes when you hesitate.

A delivery you have to organise yourself, uninsured.

Affordable is a way in, not a category of art. The eye you train on drawings is the eye you will buy paintings with.
