Where art sells: a short tour of the market
The art market by region, in a short tour: North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Mexico and Latin America, and what it means if you collect from home.
ByErick González

Art is made everywhere and sold in a few places more than others. Here is a short tour, drawn from the market index we keep: about half a million works that galleries have marked as sold, some 2,700 galleries in ninety countries and the year's fair calendar.
North America
The largest room in the house. About a third of the galleries in our index are in the United States, and one in four sold works is by an American artist.
Europe
Old collections, many fairs and a long habit of buying living artists. The United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany follow the United States in number of galleries.
Asia-Pacific
A market that keeps growing. South Korea has about as many galleries in our index as Spain, and Japanese artists are among the most sold.
Mexico and Latin America
Our home. Mexico City's art week brings the world here every February, and artists from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile appear all across the index. They are still a small part of what the listings show, fewer than four in a hundred sold works, which says more about who has been looking than about the art.
What it means for you
You can live anywhere and collect from anywhere. A work travels insured, the delivery cost shows before you pay, and a video call replaces most visits. What changes from country to country is the import tax, so ask before you buy across a border.
And the fairs
Our calendar lists 230 fairs for 2026. One good one a year is plenty.

How to search for affordable art without buying badly
Affordable does not mean cheap. Where original art under USD 2,000 really is: works on paper, editions, emerging artists, studio sales and the fairs’ side rooms.
