Thinking of selling a work of art? Three ways to do it in Mexico

Three ways to sell a work of art in Mexico, what to have at hand and how the price is found. A gallery’s short guide, without the fine print.

Collections change. A work that was right for one home, or one moment, may be ready for another wall. Selling it does not have to be complicated, and it helps to know there are three ways to do it.

1. Open it to offers

If the work came from our gallery, it already has its certificate. From your account you can open it to offers: it appears on Art Auctions & Private Sales with its certificate, and nothing about you. Offers reach the gallery, we bring them to you, and if one is right we close it. The certificate moves to the new owner and the artist receives a resale royalty.

2. Leave it with a gallery

This is consignment: the gallery offers the work on your behalf and earns a commission only if it sells. The work is yours until the day it is paid. With us there is no listing fee, the commission is agreed in writing before the work is offered, and you can take the work back whenever you like if it has not sold. Tell us about it at Sell Art.

3. A quiet sale

For some works, or some owners, discretion matters. The gallery looks for a buyer among the collectors who follow the artist or the medium, without publishing the work.

What to have at hand

The basics: artist, title, year, medium, dimensions.

How it came to you: an invoice, a gallery, a gift, an inheritance.

The certificate, if there is one.

A few honest photographs: front, back, signature and any damage.

How the price is found

From the artist's path, the size and condition of the work, and what the market is actually paying. Our market index helps here: of about half a million works that galleries have marked as sold, seven in ten of those with a public price sold for less than 5,000 dollars. A realistic price, with the papers in order, usually sells sooner than an ambitious one.

Two small questions

Can I sell a work I did not buy from you?

Yes, on consignment or as a quiet sale. We look at it first and tell you honestly whether we can place it.

When do I get paid?

Once the collector has received the work.

If you would like company

This is what we do every day from Mexico City: help people find, buy and live with original contemporary art. Book a free 30-minute call, or simply look at the works available now.
